So what are we looking for in an ideal candidate?
- PE-backed and M&A client experience. This is a must-have for this role. You’ve supported PE portfolio companies, recently acquired businesses, and clients in the middle of a deal, and you know how differently each of those situations feels for the people living through it. You have hands-on experience with M&A accounting and rollups, and you can step in wherever a client is in that process.
- Onboarding and direction. You can step into a newly acquired or newly onboarded client, work out quickly what is right and wrong in both their books and their overall finance processes. You can quickly establish trust and give the client, the client’s finance team, and our own team a clear plan for cleanup, close, and reporting. You’re comfortable with purchase accounting, opening balance sheets, multi-entity consolidations, and diligence or lender requests.
- Extensive multi-client cloud finance leadership. You’ve remotely managed a portfolio of clients with sophisticated financial needs across various industries. You bring 8+ years of accounting and finance experience, including leading month-end close processes, implementing internal controls, preparing audit-ready financials, and guiding clients through complex financial environments.
- High-level financial reporting & analysis expertise. You prepare and review accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and deliver clear, actionable insights. You’re fluent in GAAP, lease accounting, and revenue recognition, and know how to communicate financial data in a way that empowers client decision-making. You’ve had vast experience with cashflow forecasting and budget vs actual analysis, etc.
- Strong operational accounting oversight. You have deep experience managing or coordinating bookkeeping, AP/AR, general ledger integrity, reconciliations, and revenue recognition. You know how to build, lead, and improve consistent, scalable accounting processes across clients and teams. You’ve also worked closely with auditors, tax teams, and compliance partners, maintaining thorough documentation and strong internal controls year-round.
- Tech fluency. Hands-on experience in NetSuite, Sage Intacct, QuickBooks Online, Advanced Excel, Bill, Ramp, Gusto, and ADP. Karbon is a plus.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance. CPA firm or public accounting experience strongly preferred.
- Leadership & Communication. You build strong relationships with business owners, finance teams, sponsors, and external partners. You communicate clearly across digital channels and bring warmth to team and client interactions.
- Technical Excellence & Problem-Solving. You maintain rigorous standards for accuracy, deliver consistent results, and lead with resourcefulness. You manage complex client situations with patience while ensuring accounting integrity, knowing when to dig in and when to seek collaboration.
- People Development. You delegate effectively, mentor finance staff, and coach others toward excellence. You create environments where people grow.
- Growth Mindset. You approach your work with humility, actively seek coaching, and give constructive feedback. Continuous improvement drives how you work.
What does the day to day look like for this role?
- Serve as the outsourced controller for multiple PE-backed and recently acquired clients. You onboard new and newly acquired businesses by assessing their books, setting close calendars and reporting standards, and giving clear direction. You support clients through M&A activity, including diligence, purchase accounting, consolidation, and integration.
- Act as the primary client contact, building relationships with business owners, finance teams, sponsors, and external audit/tax partners. You communicate clearly, manage expectations, and advise with confidence.
- Oversee accounting operations and ensure accuracy across the GL, AP/AR, and reconciliations. You prepare and review financial statements, lead the monthly close, and perform variance analysis.
- Lead Account Managers by delegating complex tasks, reviewing work, and coaching with clarity and empathy. You train others in advanced accounting practices that apply across client portfolios.
- Own process improvement and software integration. You evaluate, recommend, and implement new systems, often stepping into client-specific software and systems inherited through acquisitions. You design workflows to integrate technology seamlessly and continuously look for ways to enhance quality, efficiency, and scalability.
