Director of Tax

We are actively seeking a Director of Tax, a joyful and driven team member who will lead our firm’s fully remote tax department, offering expert guidance to clients while overseeing the performance and development of our tax team. This role combines advanced technical expertise with strong people management skills to ensure high-quality client service, technical accuracy, and team growth. The Director of Tax will report directly to the CEO of System Six and will work closely with the entire executive team to shape the direction of the tax division and drive operational excellence.

Professional Skills
- Mastery in tax compliance with progressive experience in the industry. 5+ years in leadership or management capacity of a tax team that prepared filings for small to midsized businesses and their owners across a variety of industries with an emphasis in service, tech and real estate. Experience in multi state apportionment and skilled in tax incentives such as R&D credits, cost segregation and related specialty areas. Expertise with pass-through entities (S-Corps, LLCs) and C-Corps. Experience with foreign parent and subsidiaries is a plus
- Experience with a variety of tax planning functions. Tax projections, estimated tax calculations, PTET planning and calculations, retirement planning, tax incentives, entity structure, and more. Able to convert planning opportunities into actionable steps for clients. Most clients have some level of proactive tax planning built into their service agreements
- Bachelor's in Accounting or other finance-related field and an active CPA license
- Substantial experience with California tax law (a large # of our clients are within CA)
- Fluency with modern cloud accounting and tax software products. Experience in Karbon and Lacerte is a must
- Advanced knowledge of tax laws, regulations, and compliance
- Strong leadership skills with a proven track record of managing and developing high-performing teams
- Strategic thinking. Work with the executive team to align tax department initiatives with company-wide goals
What does the day to day look like for this role?
- As our Director of Tax, you will oversee a department of 5 other individuals serving approximately 100 clients representing around 200 returns. We expect this to grow in the coming years as we look to our tax department alongside our blossoming CAS business
- Your primary responsibilities are:
- To joyfully manage your team - to get to know them as individuals and to build team cohesion and trust through holding weekly team meetings and individual one-on-ones, to actively develop and grow their professional skills
- To oversee your team’s delivery of tax services - including the review and oversight of business and individual tax returns, proactive tax planning and strategy, and compliance monitoring. You will ensure that work prepared by your team is accurate, timely, and aligned with client needs. Responsibilities include monitoring task lists to keep projects on track, conducting monthly and quarterly audits for quality control, reviewing and answering complex tax questions, guiding the team through challenging client conversations, and managing team hours and efficiency. You will also communicate team capacity to sales, provide detailed oversight of new client onboarding, and ensure clients consistently receive high-quality and timely tax support. You will also have a group of clients for whom you will lead and ultimately sign returns
- To support and advise clients - serve as a trusted senior advisor by conducting high-level consultations to understand client goals and challenges, reviewing complex tax positions, and providing clear, actionable recommendations. You will interpret and communicate complex tax concepts in practical terms, helping clients make confident business and financial decisions. As Director of Tax, you will also ensure the delivery of consistent, proactive guidance across your portfolio, maintain strong client relationships, and contribute to the ongoing refinement of System Six’s tax department to better serve our clients

- Strong compensation. This exempt position offers a base salary range of $175,000-$200,000+ and an annual, significant uncapped bonus tied to controllable tax department results. Importantly, we expect to grow the tax department significantly yet sustainably overtime, and see a real path to $300,000+ compensation over the next several years
